INHERIT

INHERIT is a European Union network project funded, until December 2007, by the INTERREG 3C programme which seeks to promote interregional cooperation throughout the EU.

Much of Europe’s most important physical cultural heritage is experienced in the context of historic towns and cities and, as such, cultural heritage is crucial to the future well-being and prosperity of historic cities. The INHERIT project’s starting point is that, however, there is currently a lack of evidence to convince many cities and stakeholders of the benefits of heritage led regeneration, a lack of information as to how to regenerate cities through investment in heritage and a lack of good practice guidance.

The key aim of INHERIT is to understand the underlying processes that underpin successful heritage led regeneration.

Under the leadership of the European Association of Historic Towns and Regions (EAHTR), the project has attracted a range of European cities including Belfast, Newcastle, Göteborg, Verona, Gdansk and Ubeda. In addition, Queens University Belfast has been appointed to provide specialist external expertise to the project.

The work of INHERIT involves study visits to each partner city to identify different approaches to heritage led regeneration, key issues and local examples of good practice. The project has identified the following strategic themes to ensure a structured approach to the work i.e. good practice, policy and legislation, quality, strategy, governance, methodology, benefit realisation and liaison with other related projects. There will also be secondments between partner cities to transfer experience on a more detailed basis.

Dissemination of the project’s work will be achieved through a range of outputs including the preparation of a good practice guide and a report on the effectiveness of regional policy in relation to heritage led regeneration. Two International Symposia will be held in Göteborg and Verona to involve a wide range of decision makers, practitioners and academics in the work of the project.

INHERIT is maintaining contacts with the lead partners of two related INTERREG projects - QUALICITIES which aims to develop a local sustainable development strategy for small historic towns and CULTURED which is investigating new uses for heritage buildings in rural areas. A joint website for these projects is under development by Ubeda, a partner in all three projects.

Documents relating to several aspects of the project’s work are listed on the downloads page and more detailed information about the work of partner cities on heritage led regeneration can be obtained from the persons listed on the partners’ page
